West Virginia Megan's Law

Being named after Megan Kanka, Megan's Law was put into federal law in 1995. Megan's Law demands that each state put a method in place for alerting the general public when a sexual offender is moves into their neighborhood.
Megan was merely seven years old when a prior sexual predator that resided accross the street from her family, abducted, rapped, and murdered her. It was concluded that if her family or other local residents had been aware that a previous sexual offender was living amongst them, this crime would've been prevented. On that train of thought, the U.S. Congress passed the "Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994", aka Megan's Law, without any objections.
Since the law was passed, West Virginia has made it a point to protect its public by providing the most recent information relating to past sex offenders and their whereabouts. The bill has shown that while sexual assaults are still a problem in the U.S., offenses committed by prior offenders are on a regression.
The information obtainable with the enactment of Megan's Law has continued to be a critical benefit in keeping one's family safe from the threat of sexual crimes.
